TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Announces a Model Change for its Best-selling Ship KAMSARMAX

2018-08-01 08:00

TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd. (HQ: 1083 Tsuneishi, Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan; President: Kenji Kawano; hereinafter, “TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING”) will implement a model change for its best-selling PANAMAX ship, the KAMSARMAX bulk carrier, with improvements for environmental performance and operation profitability.

The basic concept of the new model KAMSARMAX was developed to preserve the virtues of the conventional model while enhancing usability for customers.

・Improvement of environmental performance
Amid a growing focus on environmental issues, such as global warming and sea contamination, and expanding demand for ships with high environmental performance that includes fuel efficiency, this model will meet next-generation environmental regulations, i.e. the international NOx emission Tier III regulation (*1) and GBS (*2) (Goal-based ship construction standards).

・Improvement of fuel efficiency and transport efficiency
We are employing our unique energy-saving technologies: MT-FAST (*3), the hull fitting that boosts propulsion efficiency, and Optimized Propulsive Gear TOP-GR (*4). Fuel efficiency was boosted by designing a hull with minimal ocean wave resistance and accommodations with minimal wind pressure resistance. We also equipped the KAMSARMAX with excellent loading capacity to increase transport efficiency.

KAMSARMAX has garnered the support of many customers in the 13 years since its launch in 2005. In less than a decade, we completed construction on a total of 200 ships, growing to capture global top share (*5) in the category of 65,000 to 99,999 tons PANAMAX bulk carriers built worldwide from 2008 onward. In addition to KAMSARMAX, we also completed development of other next-generation models, such as our core bulk carriers and tankers, to meet new international rules.

TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING will continue to perceive customer needs and is committed to building ships with excellent environmental performance and transportation efficiency to benefit our customers' businesses.

*1. NOx emission Tier III regulation: A regulation that applies to ships built from January 1, 2016 and after, while operating in ECAs (Emission Control Areas: within 200 nautical miles of US and Canadian coasts and the Caribbean Sea area.) The North Sea and Baltic Sea have been designated as ECAs for ships built from January 1, 2021 onward. This regulation requires that NOx emissions are reduced to 80% of those required by Tier I.
*2. GBS: Goal-based ship construction standards, which are set international requirements with certain goals for ship construction.
*3. MT-FAST: An energy-saving hull fitting that can boost propulsion efficiency by approximately 4% by attaching multiple fins to the front of the propeller to adjust water flow. This was developed in partnership with Monohakobi Technology Institute (MTI), a NYK Line Group company.
*4. TOP-GR:We designed and developed a highly efficient, low-vibration energy-saving propeller with an optimized blade number, diameter, aerofoil shape, and blade geometric distribution through precise computer-based calculations and simulations.
*5. Shipbuilding results of 65,000 to 99,999 tons bulk carriers completed worldwide from 2008 through 2017 (Source: Clarksons)
