On 26 February, TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING Co., Ltd.(HQ: 1083 Tsuneishi, Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama, Hiroshima, Japan; President: Kenji Kawano; hereinafter, “TSUNEISHI”) released “Behind The Scenes: guntû” on its group channel, a film documenting the creation of guntû, which made its first commercial voyage in October 2017.

In “Behind The Scenes: guntû”, interviews with members of Hull Design Group of TSUNEISHI SHIPBUILDING, architect Yasushi Horibe, and Kenzo Sato of Tokyo’s “Shigeyoshi” restaurant, provide insight into the stories behind the creation of guntû — from conception to its first voyage. These stories, along with views of the wooden interior, and rarely revealed scenes such as water tank testing with Hiroshima University and glimpses of the bridge and the engine room, all illustrate the fact that guntû features the best available technology and that its designers went to extremes in pursuit of authenticity.

guntû, a cruise ship designed to be a “a little hotel floating on the Seto Inland Sea”, represents the industry's first ever collaboration between shipbuilders and an architect and offers uncompromising “luxury afloat on the Seto Inland Sea”.

Experience the hush of the Seto Inland Sea
Electric propulsion has been employed to cut the main noise source, the propulsion system. The ultimate in quiet performance has been achieved with a raft of noise measures including rethinking installation arrangements for the generators that supply power to the propulsion motor and hotel services, sound-proof construction to contain noise inside the engine room, and use of sound-proofing materials in all of the floors, walls, and ceilings in the hotel zone.

In harmony with tranquil nature
Architect Yasushi Horibe, who was responsible for the planning and design of the liner, created a Japanese-style interior using wooden materials and stone tiles, a hull that reflects the vistas of the Seto Inland Sea as they change over time, and a gabled roof that blends in with the tiled roofs that line the shores of the Setouchi Region — all features designed to make this ship a part of life on the Seto Inland Sea, which is home to human venture too.

Appreciate Setouchi through cuisine
Cuisine aboard the liner is prepared under the supervision of Kenzo Sato — head of “Shigeyoshi”, a long-established Japanese-style restaurant in Harajuku — and local ingredients are prepared to suit the palates of passengers and the day’s weather.

Enjoy the stories about the collaboration of multiple industries to create guntû, a luxury cruise ship that conveys the charm of Setouchi to the world.
