Bella Vista Sakaigahama Ribbon Chapel Awarded JCD Design Award 2014 Grand Prix World's First Double-spiral Construction
The “Ribbon Chapel” of the Resort Hotel Bella Vista Sakaigahama (Location: 1344-2, Ohiraki, Urasaki-cho, Onomichi City, Hiroshima; Manager: Hideaki Kambara), which is operated by Tsuneishi Sakaigahama Resort Co., Ltd. (Head Office Location: 1083 Tsuneishi, Numakuma-cho, Fukuyama City, Hiroshima; President: Hidetada Kambara), was selected for the JCD Design Award 2014 Grand Prix.
The Japan Commercial Environmental Design Association started the JCD Design Award in 1974 aiming for it to become a spatial design award centered around commercial environments, and expanded its candidates to Asian countries in 2003. The award has six categories (shop spaces, dining spaces, large commercial spaces, service and entertainment spaces, culture and public communication spaces, and common living spaces), and the Ribbon Chapel was selected for the Grand Prix from a total of 473 candidates in 2014.
Completed in December 2013, the Ribbon Chapel is a small wedding chapel. Two spiral staircases are entwined like a ribbon around the chapel, smoothly joining at the top and, by supporting each other, they symbolize two people joining in matrimony. There is an observation deck at the top from which many islands of the Seto Inland Sea can be seen in a 360-degree panorama, and two people who have led separate lives can experience being together at the top of a ribbon of destiny. While it is normal for the bride and groom to equate walking down the virgin road with the path of life, this architecture aims to magnify that experience and move both the bride and groom as well as the guests.
